To save money in the fuel crisis, Mr. Grace decides to cut off the heat on the coldest day of the year. The ladies' room is frozen over and Mrs. Slocombe and Miss Brahms have to negotiate with the Men's Counter to share their facilities. Furthermore, Mr. Rumbold bans the use of heating devices on the floor, but is sneaking an electric heater into his office. When the staff finds out about it, they start using any heating device they can get their hands on, from liquor (hidden in an atomizer), to hairdryers (to blow up pant legs), to oven mitts ("they're novelty footwarmers"). When the men are caught after a fiasco with an iron, they're brought before Mr. Rumbold, who in a hurry to conceal his heater leaves it in his desk drawer while it's on. This is not good.
